I have been approached by a few people in need of DMM services that are not near me. Nor is there any other DMM located near them as I always make sure to check. I currently do not work remotely with any DMM clients and wouldn’t know how to approach this. For those of you that do this, how do you approach those clients? I currently have someone requesting help but it would have to be remotely. Thank you in advance!
October 9, 2019 at 2:39 pm #13114AnonymousInactiveI have recently relocated to Florida but am still servicing clients in Connecticut. For those I have POA for it was a simple change of address. I am also curious to read responses to your question – may save me some time getting organized. Thanks

https://secure.aadmm.com/forums/search/remotely/ also has some information about people who work remotely.
October 9, 2019 at 2:54 pm #13116AnonymousInactiveThank you Thomas! I was looking for that webinar earlier and must have just skimmed past it.
I will also take a look at the other topic link.October 10, 2019 at 12:10 pm #13117AnonymousInactiveIf this is something you want to get into, there is always a first client. It can be easier to transition a client you have seen in person to a remote client, especially when you are first starting out in remote work. If it is something you are not comfortable with doing yet, you might consider finding another DMM who regularly works remotely and making an introduction for the potential client. When/if you are ready to learn the ropes, the webinar above might be a good place to start and there will also be a session on this topic at the conference this year. There are lots of logistics to sort through in the beginning…how will you get the bills (email, mailbox, client will scan and send them to you or mail them to you)? How will you pay those bills…online access, POA? How will you “meet” with the client and how often…video chat, emailing reports, phone calls? There are a lot of things to consider.

I would find out exactly which services they need (bill pay, expense tracking, budgeting, etc.), have a few ideas of how you could help them remotely, and then go from there. I think communication is key when working remotely. There are many products that work great for remote work. Some examples include Google Drive/Dropbox to share info/documents; Lastpass to share passwords/websites; Mint, Personal Capital, You Need A Budget for expense/budget tracking, email/scanning for bills. If you’ve been working as a DMM already, I don’t see why you should have any trouble going remote-it will be a little different but you can do it! Sometimes a change in mindset is all you need.

Lynn I would love to be able to join you at the conference and sit in on your presentation, however my DMM business is still very small and do not currently have the extra funds in the budget for travel. I was looking at the scheduled sessions and looks like it will be a great conference!
Caitlin, thank you. I currently work remotely for bookkeeping clients. All of whom I have never met in person. It is a little different beast working with the DMM side but some of the things you mentioned helped me figure out how I will be approaching this. I will be speaking with the prospective client again today to find out their exact needs.
Heather, thank you for all those suggestions. They are all great and something I will be looking into.
