I would like to hear if any of my colleagues or your clients have had direct experience with purchasing travel insurance and processing a claim.

I am conducting internet research myself, so only your personal recommendations, please (rather than, “I heard about” xyz company…).

My client’s partner is nearing end of life and is planning a trip that may need to be refunded. We are looking at policies with Travel Guard and Allianz.

    Thank you!

    Susan:

I have used both of these companies personally and they have bee very straightforward in fulfilling the claims.

Whenever I travel overseas, I purchase from HTH. They have 3 different options, one or two of which allow you to cancel for any reason. I get both the trip cancellation and medical coverage. I have never had to file a claim for myself but did on one of my daughters about 5 or 6 years ago. They were wonderful handling her accident and even allowed us to purchase additional insurance for her surgery in the States because it was a continuing injury from overseas.

Allianz is what was used when my parents traveled on my Dad’s last trip. He passed away overseas. The ins was great:
    1. Helped expedite getting my Mother home – and paid for all flight changes and Hotel/meals.
    2. Paid for my Father’s medical bills and cremation before also paying to return the ashes.

They did not pay to get my Mother’s luggage back as it was “not lost”. DHL was the only international carrier we could use and that was a big hassle. Would have been much better to have lost it!

My mom took a cruise with Princess and used AON Travel for medical insurance on-board. She did end up using it and it’s taking forever to get back what is owed…when off US waters, Medicare first has to REJECT the bill and then the secondary can pay…still waiting. AON has requested documentation, again, to complete the claim.

I’ve used Allianz on several occasions. Unfortunately, I’ve had to cancel a few trips for the covered reasons.
Fortunately, they paid the claims in full and promptly.
