I am looking for suggestions of software that will scan a bank or telecom statement and create a spreadsheet from the transactions/call records. Any have experience w this?

    Hi Amy,

Scanning documents like a PDF (Bank statement) to then extract data can be tricky – in my experience sometime it works, but most of the time it does not.

That said here is a company that has a tool for converting file types that may help.

    Prospersoft

As for the telecom statement you could try a good scanner (I use the Fujitsu desktop ix500 and also have the portable ix100) with good OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and see if it can pick up the fields accurately. As mentioned above, it can be tricky and sometime you end up spending significant amount of time fixing the errors/cleaning up the data.

    Hope that helps.

I use MoneyThumb to scan bank account PDFs into Quicken formatted documents for uploading into Quicken (no need to know bank account login information). I believe there is an option to upload into a spreadsheet as well. It works great for quicken, don’t know about the other options. It is not free, however.

Some of the banks offer the option to save a statement as a CSV (comma separated values) file that can be imported to Excel and saved as and xls file. If you would like more info on how to do that, I can walk you through it on the phone.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I tried several tools and found nothing to brag about. So I made it a searchable PDF and I hope that meets the atty’s needs.

FYI – Victoria, your answer gave me a chuckle. You are exactly right and I would have loved to have had online access. But since it is a fraud investigation, banks and teleco close ranks and will only provide data on paper!
