    Hi.

My existing clients are mostly seniors who I work for remotely and visit once or twice a month, and, while I love my existing clients, I would like to pivot my business towards more remote only work for new clients. Do you have experience with remote only clients? If so, I would love to learn:

    * What services fit well with a remote only model.
    * What types of clients this approach works best for.
    * Any tips or learnings you would be generous enough to share.

    Thanks for your help!

I would say that the best remote-only clients are those who have patience (to get started), and some level of comfort with technology, or those who are POA clients so that you can deal with the issues that arise more easily. By technology, I mean email, scanning, online banking, cloud storage and perhaps Skype/Zoom or some way of seeing your face! Otherwise, you are essentially doing work that they never see, and that’s not a good situation. Docusign is helpful also but beware of fake email.

Other than physically organizing paperwork, or human touch, there isn’t much that you can’t do online.

I do a majority of my work remotely, but a lot of it is small business bookkeeping. My best DMM clients that are remote are busy professionals and not seniors. I do all their bill paying and budgeting. I also have had good experiences with digital filing for a couple clients.

I’m happy to share specifics if you have any questions.

I have a mix of clients. Once trust is built, many don’t want to see me as it adds stress to their week. I work mostly remotely but am always offering reports to show that something is happening. I also am reaching out when exceptions happen. And I never way the bank statements as this is the client/family way to see the bank’s perspective on what I do.

You can essentially do most DMM work and all fiduciary work remotely and for most client types. The one type it won’t work for are the seniors who want to sign the checks with you at the kitchen table. I have only one client that requires I see her every other week and we sit down and write the checks together. I can’t do her work remotely. She wants to be involved and doesn’t have a computer. She is older, her husband passed away last year and I am the only one she trusts who sees her regularly.

A disclaimer…I do primarily work with busy professionals and high net worth individuals and families who are comfortable just seeing reports monthly and working via email and phone calls. All the bills typically come directly to me and in the cases where it doesn’t for one reason or another, I go pick up the mail and take it back to my office. I also often get POAs and do fiduciary work which requires less interaction with the client to get things done, but more detailed record keeping.
