September 18, 2019 at 6:26 am #13058AnonymousInactiveI have given brown bag talks at accounting, financial advisory and law firms. It is very informal. I recommend a brochure or a 1-page flyer for a handout. I usually bring cookies or something else sweet, and the staff bring their own lunches. The whole thing takes only about 30-60 minutes out of their day (they have to eat lunch anyway!) and they don’t have to go anywhere. The convenience of it helps to attract people to the session. It requires making contact with a member of the firm, often a partner or even an office manager, in order to be invited.
Recently, a client at one of the firms where I did a brown bag called me the very next day, but usually it is just a matter of educating the referral partner and planting seeds that will sprout later on.

I am a part of a large organization called Lehigh Valley Aging in Place in eastern Pennsylvania. It is a 120+ resource companies dedicated to assisting Seniors and Aging Adults in 5 surrounding counties. It’s a paid membership and has category resources like ElderCare Attorneys; non-Medical Home Care; Retirement, Memory Care, Assisted Living and Continuing Care Communities; Medical Equipment providers; and Insurance providers just to name a few. I am part of the Volunteer Committee which allows me to get involved in large community events “regularly” where there are a variety of volunteers in different industries. I’m also the co-chair of the Membership Committee which promotes personal interaction right out of the gate with any new Members to the larger organization and allows me to welcome them in, gives them information about the organization that they just joined and ways they can contribute. This also gives me the opportunity to pitch my DMM business to them which is “free marketing” from my perspective and they are none to happy to listen because they want to make a good impression as a good resource.
And as a result of my good deeds, I was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the organization which gives major visibility to every member regardless of industry.

I’m hoping to get “my foot in the door” by hosting workshops to educate the residents about the services a DMM offers. Would anyone mind sharing their ideas on topics of interest or examples of handouts they’ve used for such a forum? Also, I liked the idea of having the lunch and learn events within accounting, investment advisory, and law firms. I receive most of my referrals from investment advisors, and it’s a great idea to educate those who are unfamiliar with our profession to generate more business. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
