I have just signed with my first DMM client. Unfortunately I am not very computer savvy. I am currently using QB for my accounting clients and had planned on using that or a money program that I am familiar with to assist my DMM clients. This new client just lost her husband who did all the bookkeeping on Quicken. She would like to be able to keep track of things daily and would like me to set her up to make it as simple as possible on her computer. She has expressed that Quicken is not what she wants to use. She had questioned if we could set up a checkbook in excel so she can keep track of her balance daily. She has an Apple computer which I am not familiar with. My questions are:

Has anyone set up an excel spreadsheet for your client to keep track of these type of items; is there a template that you are aware of? I am pretty efficient in excel so I can create one but if a template is available it will save me some time before my next meeting.

    and

What is your favorite program for setting up a budget? Or again is a spreadsheet the simplest way to go?

What is your favorite programs for daily tracking/budgeting?

    Thank you for your help!

There is a check register template in excel. You could add a column for the “Category/Expense”.
Then if either of you wanted to sort by expense, it would be easy. That’s one simple option.
It really depends on how involved she wants to get with reports, budgeting, cash flow, etc.
If the only thing she wants to do is keep track, the template would work. I use one for my client
then make a new one each year.

I actually also use QuickBooks, not Quicken, for another client. I set up a household chart of accounts.
You can teach her how to enter the deposits, expenses, and vendors and that is also simple. That gives her access to other reports also. Of course, you could do either online or desktop depending on what she is comfortable with.
    I hope this helps.

I found several templates for “check register” that are various levels of complexity. One offers the ability to enyer codes for categories so it could be modified to show vs. Budget amounts if desired. Since you are proficient in Excel you could build that for her use.
