I have a client that is the POA for his mother because she has Dementia. She keeps applying for credit cards and somehow gets them. I have heard there is a way that the POA can make it so she won’t be approved for credit cards but I don’t know how to do that. Does anyone in the group know? Do you know if it is a simple letter to each credit bureau?

    Thank you,
    Michelle

Hello Michelle – Very simple indeed! He can freeze her credit bureaus. They allow a POA to do it for a person who has dementia. You’ll have to look up the details on each bureau’s website.

Remind him to keep the good records in case he ever has to unfreeze them for some reason. Each freeze will come with a PIN and/or a user ID/password.

    Good luck with this!

The POA should be able to freeze her credit with the three major credit bureaus, and it’s a good thing to do anyway. When they can’t check her credit, no cards will be issued.

Use the following links to freeze credit at each of the 3 credit bureaus:

    800-685-1111

    Experian

Her POA can also freeze her credit online through the FTC’s annualcreditreport.com site if you know some credit history (usually mortgage or credit card company names), places lived, SSN, DOB etc. This might be challenging if there are no records and she does not remember things.
