I just tried to unlock my Experian credit freeze so that I could apply for QuickBooks’ payment feature. I have my PIN and entered all the correct info. Got rejected twice (online and on phone). They want me to mail in all kinds of identifying info. When I went on Experian site to try to reach a person to try to find out what the problem might be, I cannot find a phone number to speak to a real person. I’m a bit worried now about these freezes. This time it was not time-sensitive. Any ideas on how to make this work in a critical situation for a client? As far as my situation, I think I’ll order my credit report first to make sure all my info is correct. It makes me wonder if I’ve been flagged somehow because I’ve used my computer to help clients freeze their credit. Does that sound paranoid?

    All help appreciated!

My experience with Experian is that their process and system never works. I always have to dig and dig to find a phone number and call them to get anything done. My husband recently went to freeze his credit and it didn’t work either.

They have major technical issues and it’s frustrating…especially considering they are supposed to be protecting our credit.

I don’t think it’s anything related to you. Their process doesn’t work. Hopefully you can find the number and get someone on the phone. Sorry you are going through this.

I also know that the bureaus have been charging for some states and not others. SC is free for all three to freeze. With Lynn’s recent move, could this be affecting it?

I have one client who was born in Belfast N Ireland…I had to freeze him over the phone w a supervisor. And another who was too old (101) to be done on line.

Anyone know how to get a person on the phone at Experian?

My paperwork shows the following as possible numbers:
    Experian: 888 397 3742
    Equifax: 888 766 0008
    TransUnion: 800 680 7289

That’s the Experian number I called twice. Kept giving me info, but never an option to talk to someone. I even hit 0 every times.

    Try 1 (877) 284-7942?

Amy, I did not ever try the phone number that Amy posted on Dec 7 at 3:12pm. I let my brain rest and my annoyance subside. When I went back to the Experian site a second time a few days later, I noticed that they offer the opportunity to supply a creditor with a one-time code to “pull” your credit. The link is right on their home page. I went through the steps and even entered my freeze PIN. It worked and I was given the code to give the creditor. I also got a copy of my Experian credit report and besides a few incorrect addresses and one incorrect name, I was pleased to see that my report was basically correct. The addresses have been deleted and I’m waiting for a response on the name (putting my middle initial before my first name). Happy holidays to all!

I recently wanted an Alaska Airlines credit card to replace the Virgin America one that is going away at the end of this month. Experian’s unlocking process worked amazingly well, and I was able to unlock it while on the phone with the credit card person and then re-freeze it with no problem at all. Just an FYI: At least for this credit card, the process was to apply on line, be rejected because my credit is frozen, which then prompted a telephone call to me. The credit card processor was able to tell me which credit bureau she wanted to use and I was able to unfreeze the account for her while she waited. She had my credit report instantly and approved the card so I was able to re-freeze right away. Easy peasy.
