    Hello,

I am a DMM working with seniors and veterans as a solopreneur but recently was asked by a couple of individuals who are starting DMM businesses if I would consider adding them to my business as independent contractors. One may actually start her own business but the other individual and I are looking into developing a contract so that she can start working with clients under my insurance and business name as she becomes more familiar with the industry.

I’ve reached out to several DMMs who have been really helpful and thought I’d put this question to others on the AADMM forum. What written agreements/contracts would you recommend in this type of situation where a DMM is being added as an independent contractor. Have you utilized any special contracts or agreements in your business?

Thanks for your thoughts/ideas on this topic.

Barbara – I don’t have advice on the agreements, but make sure your insurance will cover them if they are going to be independent contractors. I just renewed my policy and was told that under Lloyds, if you bring in DMMs to take on additional work as independent contractors, they are not covered. They are covered under other carriers. I went with Allied for this reason. You might want to call Dominion, if you use them, and confirm what your coverage will be with different types of engagements.

Caitin – thanks for the information. Interesting, as I did call Dominion and was told that I could add an independent contractor under my current AADMM insurance. Dominion does not invoice the DMM business by how many are working but by the gross income of the business. The Dominion rep (it wasn’t Larry) recommended that I engage an attorney to draw up a contract between me and the independent contractor and until that person had a client or two, I wouldn’t even need to notify them. Maybe I should speak with them again to clarify. Thanks again!
